Fishing is a big part of Pete Della Ratta’s life. Not only does he enjoy doing it, but he loves educating students about it, whether it’s at various fishing clinics throughout the area in the summer months or taking seventh-graders on a fishing field trip each year.
“I love showing students the basics of fishing and getting them to see it’s an outdoor activity they can do for the rest of their lives,” Della Ratta said. “Being outdoors in some way is beneficial because that is where a healthy lifestyle is developed.”
Della Ratta, a former minor league baseball player, is the current dean of students at Holley-Navarre Middle School. He will be the assistant principal at the school next year.
For more than a decade, he has encouraged middle-school students to get involved in fishing.
Every year since 2004 when he started out as a gym teacher at Woodlawn Beach Middle School, he has taken seventh-graders on a field trip. Through a grant he receives each year through Fish Florida, he is able to provide a rod and reel to every student.
