Scientific efforts key to controlling lionfish problem

Lionfish are here to stay. That is the message NOAA Research Fisheries Biologist Tom Jackson delivers when discussing the invasive species that has been present in the Gulf of Mexico since 2010.

“The cat is already out of the bag,” Jackson said. “You can’t ever get rid of them. Anyone who tells me otherwise, I just point to the phone book and the number of companies there are for getting rid of cockroaches. If they were successful, there wouldn’t be a need for so many of them.”

While eliminating lionfish is impossible, better actions can be taken to reduce the population.

The problem is cost.
