Jury resuming deliberations for ‘Big Tony’ in Boulis slaying
A South Florida jury is resuming deliberations in the trial of reputed mobster Anthony “Big Tony” Moscatiello for the 2001 slaying of a prominent businessman during a power struggle over a gambling ship fleet. The sequestered jury got the case Monday after a two-week trial and were reconvening Tuesday. Moscatiello faces the death penalty if convicted of ordering a hit man to fatally shoot Konstantinos “Gus” Boulis, founder of SunCruz Casinos and Miami Subs restaurants.
St. Augustine officer uninjured after suspect opens fire
Police say a man shooting a gun randomly in a northeast Florida neighborhood fired on a responding female officer, who escaped injury. St. Augustine police say 32-year-old Charles Patten of Palatka was arrested early Sunday morning after the shooting incident. Witnesses reported around 10 shots being fired around 2 a.m. Sunday. Officer Lora Vaughn responded, and police say she was shot at while she was still in the car. Patten surrendered after more officers arrived, and police found a loaded .380-caliber handgun in his pocket and another 9mm pistol nearby.
Officials: Man used Craigslist ads in attempt to meet kids
Authorities are searching for people who might have hired a man who was recently arrested on charges of attempted sexual enticement of a child. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said Monday that 39-year-old Nathan Alexander Bryan was arrested on June 21 after a 14-month investigation. Officials say he offered babysitting and housekeeping services on Craigslist in order to prey on children. Bryan lived in Orlando and Bradenton.
Florida men busted for selling bogus theme park tickets
Two Florida men have been charged with selling $13,000 worth of bogus theme park tickets. Osceola County sheriff’s officials said Monday that Jermaine Hernandez and Brian Lang were charged following an undercover investigation. Detectives uncovered 131 theme park tickets as part of the bust. The two were charged with resale of multi-day tickets and scheme to defraud.
Police: Man fatally stabs mother
A 50-year-old man told police he fatally stabbed his mother because she kept pushing him to get a job. Miami-Dade police say Francis Roig stabbed Georgina Roig as she slept early Monday and then drove away from the home they shared. A short time later, someone called police to report seeing a woman covered in blood outside the home. When officers arrived at the home in southwest Miami-Dade County, they found the woman dead on the sidewalk. Roig’s car was spotted later Monday. He tried to run as police approached, but was captured and now faces a second-degree murder charge.
