Alisha Johnson’s story paints a vivid picture of a lesser-known struggle that military members face with meeting their commitments while deployed.
In 2011, Johnson had just commissioned in the Marine Corps and was on her way to training in Virginia where her Australian shepherd JD would not be allowed. Her husband Shawn, a member of the Navy, was scheduled to be deployed at the same time. Though Alisha was able to find a solution from a distant relative who also lived in Virginia, the idea for Dogs on Deployment was born in the struggle.
