Update: man fined for shooting bears

An 83-year-old Fort Walton Beach man was ordered Friday to pay $750 in fines and fees and complete a hunter’s safety course for fatally shooting two Florida black bears Oct. 18, 2013.

According to court records, Okaloosa County Judge T. Patterson Maney withheld adjudication on the two misdemeanor charges that stemmed from the incident near Ward’s home.

Assistant State Attorney Ginger Madden prosecuted the case. During the state’s opening statement, Madden said the prosecution would show that Ward was not in danger when he shot a female black bear and one of her cubs last year.
