MAN CHARGED WITH STRIKING DEPUTY WITH CAR DURING SHOOTOUT
Local media outlets report that 51-year-old Michael Mainolfi was booked into the Broward County Jail on aggravated battery and six other counts after being released from a hospital Wednesday night. Deputies said they came to arrest Mainolfi on previous charges Wednesday at a Lauderdale-by-the-Sea motel when he backed his car into a deputy’s vehicle, striking the officer. The deputy then fired, hitting Mainolfi in his upper arm.
MAN CHARGED WITH RIDING MANATEES IN FLORIDA KEYS
A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report say 47-year-old James Massengale Jr. was arrested Friday after witnesses saw him touching two adult manatees and their calves around Islamorada Library Beach. The report says Massengale — a homeless, self-described student preacher in Key Largo — told witnesses he was riding the animals.
SCOTT: FLORIDA TO PUT $25M TOWARD DEVELOPING ZIKA VACCINE
Scott, who has been lashing out at the federal government for failing to pass a bill that includes Zika funding, announced his unusual action on Thursday. The Republican governor said that the money will be spent exclusively on Zika research, including speeding up the creation of a vaccine and developing new Zika testing methods.

POLICE: UNIVERSITY EMPLOYEE DIES IN APPARENT HOME INVASION
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Michael Paul says police believe Jonathan Wesley Brenton answered the door at his home around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. Following a struggle of some kind, Brenton was shot. Police officers answering a 911 call found Brenton dead at the scene. His wife and child were at the home but weren’t injured.
