DEPUTIES ARREST PARALYZED MAN WHO WON $23 MILLION VERDICT
The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 23-year-old Dontrell Stephens on its Facebook page Thursday. Stephens won his federal lawsuit against the sheriff’s office in February but has not received any money as the verdict remains under appeal. Also, under Florida law, any lawsuit payout of more than $200,000 by a local government agency must first be approved by the Legislature.
MAN ACCUSED OF KIDNAPPING FLORIDA GIRL FACES FEDERAL CHARGE
A news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Tampa says 31-year-old West Wild Hogs was indicted Wednesday on a kidnapping charge, which could carry a life sentence. Hogs was arrested at a Memphis hospital Oct. 10 after two workers recognized him and Rebecca Lewis from an Amber Alert. The girl was recovered, and police said she seemed to be physically unharmed.
FAMILIES OF 2 KILLED IN JOSE FERNANDEZ BOAT CRASH GET LAWYER
Attorney Chris Royer of the Fort Lauderdale law firm Krupnick Campbell says he’s representing the families of 27-year-old Emilio Jesus Macias and 25-year-old Eduardo “Eddy” Rivero. They died Sept. 25 when Fernandez’ 32-foot boat slammed into a jetty. Fernandez was an emerging baseball star known for his exuberant personality and style of play.
POLICE: UBER DRIVER ADMITS TO SEXUALLY BATTERING CUSTOMER
News outlets report arrest records show 26-year-old Nimer Abdallah was taken into custody Tuesday on a charge of sexual battery of a victim who was physically incapacitated. A report says Abdallah picked up the female victim and another person to drive them home early Saturday. Investigators say at some point, Abdallah sexually battered the victim while she was intoxicated.
TROOPERS: CAR HITS, KILLS MAN IN WHEELCHAIR NEAR ORLANDO
The crash happened early Thursday along the Orange Blossom Trail south of Orlando. According to an incident report, the man was trying to cross the road in a marked crosswalk around 5:12 a.m. Witnesses told troopers the driver had the green light and traveled into the intersection. The man, whose name hasn’t been released, was ejected from his wheelchair.
