SPECIAL ELECTION SET FOR SEAT RESIGNED BY FLORIDA SENATOR

Gov. Rick Scott signed an executive order Monday to set a July 25 primary election for the seat formerly held by Republican Sen. Frank Artiles. The special election will take place Sept. 26. Artiles resigned April 21, four days after he used the slur and vulgarities at a private club near the state Capitol. He later apologized on the Senate floor.

FLORIDA STATE REP. JAY FANT FILES TO RUN FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL

Fant is a businessman and former CEO of a small Jacksonville bank started by his grandfather. He was elected to the state House in 2014 after winning a primary by just two votes. He plans to make several stops around the state after the Legislature wraps up its annual session to kick off his campaign, beginning Tuesday in Tallahassee.

MIAMI OFFICER INJURED IN CRASH WHILE RESPONDING TO CALL

Miami police spokeswoman Kenia Fallat told reporters at the accident scene that the officer was “responding in emergency mode to a priority call” when the crash happened at 4:30 a.m. Monday. Fallat says 26-year-old Carlos Gomez, who has been with the agency for one year, suffered head and leg injuries. Gomez was unconscious and trapped in his cruiser, which was pushed into a building near the intersection.

FLORIDA AG COMMISSIONER: ‘NO END IN SIGHT’ FOR WILDFIRES

Commissioner Adam Putnam said in a news release that nearly 125 active wildfires were burning Monday morning. Officials in Pasco County near Tampa, on Florida’s Gulf Coast, called off classes Monday at an elementary, a middle and a high school near fire that burned some 2,300 acres (930.8 hectares) over the weekend.

POLICE: 2 SHOT OUTSIDE MIAMI BEACH’S FONTAINEBLEAU HOTEL

The shooting happened about 9 p.m. Sunday on a ramp that runs between the hotel’s main building and the Tresor Tower. Miami Beach Police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said in a news release that the victims ran inside the hotel for help. Rodriguez says a woman had one bullet wound and is in stable condition. The man was shot multiple times and was in critical condition at a Miami hospital.
