SHERIFF: 2-YEAR-OLD ACCIDENTALLY STRANGLED BY CURTAIN CORD
Broward County sheriff’s spokeswoman Gina Carter said Thursday that Mary Molina’s mother, Jenna Holland, had put the girl down for a nap on the parents’ bed Wednesday. When Holland returned, she found her daughter entangled in the cords and unconscious. The mother and deputies attempted CPR but were unable to revive the child. The girl was pronounced dead at a hospital an hour later.
2 FLORIDA PANTHERS KILLED IN SEPARATE VEHICLE STRIKES
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that a 4-year-old female’s body was found Thursday near the intersection of Daniel’s Parkway and Commerce Lakes Drive in Lee County, and a 2-year-old male was found the same day on U.S. 27 near Venus in Highlands County. The remains will be taken to a Gainesville facility for a necropsy.
16 STUDENTS DISCIPLINED IN FLORIDA BATHROOM SEX INCIDENT
Lee County School District spokeswoman Amity Chandler said Wednesday that the punishment ranged on several levels. She didn’t specify what punishments were handed down. The discipline followed the discovery that multiple male students engaged in sexual activity with a female student in a restroom on May 17.
JUDGE: HEARING TO REMOVE DEBARY MAYOR CAN MOVE AHEAD
A judge on Thursday denied an attempt by DeBary Mayor Clint Johnson to block the city council hearing. Judge Sandra Upchurch ruled that Johnson had failed to meet the burden of proof for getting an injunction preventing the hearing. The city council is meeting Wednesday to determine if Johnson violated city charter rules that prohibit council members from giving orders to city staff.
