FORMER REP. CORRINE BROWN FOUND GUILTY IN CHARITY SCAM

The jury’s verdict on Thursday came after prosecutors accused the 70-year-old Brown of using hundreds of thousands of dollars from the One Door for Education Foundation for lavish parties, trips and shopping excursions. She was found guilty on 18 of the 22 counts against her, including lying on tax and financial disclosure forms.

MAN DIES AFTER CRASHING INTO HYDRANT, SUCKED INTO HOLE

Authorities say 89-year-old Robert Dreyer of Melbourne struck the hydrant with his car in a Viera neighborhood Wednesday morning. Florida Highway Patrol officials say the man got out of his vehicle as water spewed from the hydrant. He was quickly washed under the car and into a hole flooded by the pressurized water flow.

POLICE OFFICER RESPONDING TO CALL FATALLY HITS MAN IN ROAD

Jacksonville Sheriff’s officials tell news outlets that Officer T.L. James was heading to a call at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday when the accident occurred. Officials say James didn’t have his emergency lights on but was traveling behind a Jacksonville Fire and Rescue vehicle that had its lights activated. News outlets report the fire truck managed to avoid the man, who then stopped in the center lane before darting back across the road.

SUV HITS, KILLS FLORIDA MAN PUSHING MOTHER IN WHEELCHAIR

The Florida Highway Patrol says the driver, 58-year-old James Essad, swerved to try to avoid hitting Jose Matos Vargas about 5:30 Thursday morning in Orlando. Essad had a green light and the right of way. The mother, whose name and age wasn’t available, wasn’t injured. The SUV didn’t hit the wheelchair. Vargas was taken to a hospital, where he died.

FLORIDA WOMAN ACCUSED OF STEALING $10K IN LOTTERY TICKETS

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says they’ve arrested 41-year-old Teresa Blanco, of Little Torch Key, and charged her with grand theft. Officials with Winn-Dixie contacted authorities when they noticed an almost $14,000 shortage in lottery inventory. Authorities say when they arrived at the store an employee showed them a surveillance video of Blanco pocketing $25 scratch-off tickets and only paying for $2 and $5 tickets.
