GOV. RICK SCOTT TELLS YALE: BRING THE IVY LEAGUE TO FLORIDA
Scott on Tuesday urged Yale University to ditch Connecticut and relocate its campus. The Republican explained that Connecticut legislators are considering a bill that would tax Yale’s massive university endowment. Scott said in a statement that Florida would “welcome a world-renowned university” and promised that the state wouldn’t impose taxes on the endowment.
CENTRAL FLORIDA MAYOR SUSPENDED BY GOVERNOR
Gov. Rick Scott issued an executive order Tuesday prohibiting Eatonville Mayor Anthony Grant from performing official acts until further notice. A grand jury on Monday returned a 25-count indictment alleging that Grant and two campaign workers participated in a bribes-for-votes scheme. State Attorney Jeff Ashton says Grant offered bribes and lowered rent in exchange for votes by absentee ballots.
GOV. RICK SCOTT, CABINET OK PLAN TO ADD WATER TO FLORIDA POWER & LIGHT’S TURKEY POINT POWER PLANT CANALS
The governor and other elected officials approved the plan Tuesday, even though the owner of a nearby business said problems with the canals could soon force him to shut down his limerock mining operation. Under the plan, FPL will draw up to 14 million gallons of water a day from wells and add it to the canals located near the nuclear power plant.
BREVARD LEADERS TACKLE BIG FISH KILL IN INDIAN RIVER LAGOON
Commissioners instead passed a resolution Tuesday that asks the governor and lawmakers to take other steps that they say will help address the problem. Those measures include requiring septic tanks to be inspected when a house is sold, increasing funding for dredging and expediting permitting for dredging muck in the lagoon.
2 MEN CHARGED IN FATAL SHOOTING OF FLORIDA KEYS COUPLE
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reports in a news release that 33-year-old Jeremey Macauley was charged Monday with two counts of first-degree murder, and 34-year-old Adrian Demblans was charged with being an accessory to murder. Authorities say 26-year-old Tara Rosado and 30-year-old Carlos Ortiz were fatally shot in their home in October. The woman’s children, ages 3, 4 and 8, were home at the time of the shooting.
