SHERIFF SAYS SHOOTER TARGETED FORMER CO-WORKERS

Sheriff Jerry Demings said 45-year-old John Robert Neumann Jr. spared the life of a woman who started working at the Fiamma factory after he was fired there in April, and for that reason, the sheriff says, he was probably targeting former co-workers. The woman ran out of the factory and called 911 from a store across the street.

FLORIDA GOV. RICK SCOTT DEFENDS RECORD-SETTING BUDGET VETOES

Scott late last week vetoed nearly $11.9 billion from the new state budget as a part of a budget deal he worked out with legislative leaders. Lawmakers will return later this week where they are expected to pass a new budget for public schools that will be higher than the one they adopted in early May. Scott’s veto total included much of the money that goes to public schools.

SHERIFF: MAN KILLED AFTER POINTING GUN AT DEPUTIES

The fatal shooting occurred Sunday night in Nassau County. Sheriff Bill Leeper says deputies responded to a 911 call where dispatchers heard gunshots in the background. Leeper says 27-year-old Jeremy Lindsey pointed a gun at the deputies who arrived, and they shot him. That incident followed a Friday night shooting in Fernandina Beach that the sheriff’s office says stemmed from a hit-and-run crash that led to a car chase.

FLORIDA SHERIFF’S DEPUTY DRAGGED WHILE MAKING TRAFFIC STOP

Volusia County Sheriff’s spokesman Gary Davidson says Deputy William Kretzer suffered abrasions and road rash Sunday. Davidson says Kretzer stopped a vehicle driven by 27-year-old LaRodney Bennett and discovered two open warrants against him. He ordered Bennett out of the car, but Bennett refused. When Kretzer reached inside to open the door, Bennett put the car in gear and took off.
