ORLANDO SHOOTING DELAYS TRIAL IN FLORIDA KEYS BOMB PLOT
A Miami federal judge on Thursday delayed the trial of 24-year-old Harlem Suarez from July 11 until Jan. 23. Suarez’s lawyers said the killing June 12 of 49 people in the Pulse nightclub would result in an unfair trial if held so soon. The FBI says Suarez drew inspiration from the Islamic State terrorist organization, as also claimed by Orlando gunman Omar Mateen.
ORLANDO GUNMAN BURIED IN SOUTH FLORIDA, DOCUMENT SHOWS
A death certificate issued Thursday shows that the body of 29-year-old Omar Mateen was buried at the Muslim Cemetery of South Florida in Hialeah Gardens near Miami. The certificate doesn’t say when Mateen was buried.
FLORIDA KEYS DELAYS RESIDENTS’ VOTE ON GMO MOSQUITOES
Federal regulators still have to approve the proposal by the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District and the biotech firm Oxitec. The non-binding Monroe County vote had been scheduled Aug. 30. The district’s five-member board decided Wednesday to postpone it until November.
POLICE: MAN SUSPECTED IN DAD’S KILLING FOUND DEAD WITH WIFE
Local news outlets report that police found 41-year-old Joseph Reddock Jr.’s car at a Daytona Beach Regency Inn on Thursday morning after serving an unrelated warrant. Police say they spent three hours trying to contact Reddock before sending a Volusia County bomb robot into his room, where they found him and his wife dead. It wasn’t clear whether the deaths were a murder-suicide or separate suicides.
PANTHER FOUND DEAD IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that the 11-year-old female cat’s body was found Wednesday on private property in Collier County. The cause of death wasn’t immediately known. The remains will be taken to a Gainesville facility for a necropsy.
