LAWSUIT CHALLENGES FLORIDA BAN ON SMOKABLE MEDICAL MARIJUANA

Lawyer John Morgan filed the lawsuit Thursday, saying smoking marijuana is the best way to administer it to some patients. Morgan led the ballot effort that put medical use of marijuana in the state constitution with 71 percent voter approval. He said the language in the constitution said marijuana can’t be smoked in public, which implies that it should be allowed in private. But the law signed by Republican Gov. Rick Scott last month bans smokable forms of marijuana.

FAA INVESTIGATING SMALL PLANE CRASH IN FLORIDA EVERGLADES

The Cessna 152 was spotted late Wednesday in a swampy area southwest of Miami, with the body of the pilot alongside the debris. In an email, FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen told The Associated Press the pilot was the only person was onboard the plane. Miami-Dade police spokesman Argemis Colome tells the Herald that the crash is “so far into the Everglades they might have to take airboats” to the scene.

FLORIDA WILL HAND OVER SOME VOTING INFORMATION TO COMMISSION

Secretary of State Ken Detzner on Thursday wrote a letter to the vice chair of the commission saying that the state will hand over information that is already public record. But Detzner said Florida law prohibits the state from turning over driver license information or Social Security numbers. He also said they would not turn over the names of voters whose information is protected, such as judges or police officers.

FLORIDA COUNTY LOSES SUIT, FACES $300 MILLION HOSPITAL BILLS

The Florida Supreme Court ruled Thursday that an obscure law requires Sarasota County to reimburse all public and private hospitals for indigent care. Private hospitals discovered the law and began submitting bills to the county, which refused to pay them. The hospitals sued and a trial court and appeals court ruled in favor of the county, saying the state constitution prohibits laws that benefit an individual corporation.
