COAST GUARD RESCUES 4 BOATERS WHO WENT MISSING OFF KEY WEST
The Coast Guard reports on social media that a rescue crew reached the missing vessel around 5 p.m. Wednesday, about 40 miles northwest of Key West. All four people onboard were reportedly in good health. A Coast Guard plane spotted the boat earlier Wednesday following a search that covered nearly 4,000 square miles by air and sea.
8TH PERSON CHARGED IN ESCAPE OF FLORIDA MURDER SUSPECT
Court records show 21-year-old Armonie Frankson-Dennis is accused of helping 21-year-old Dayonte Resiles avoid capture after his escape from the Broward County courthouse. She appeared in court Wednesday and is being held on $150,000 bail. Resiles fled the court July 15 and was on the lam nearly a week before his capture at a West Palm Beach motel.
LIGHTNING SPARKS FIRE, BURNS 80 ACRES ON FLORIDA ISLAND
Authorities say almost 80 acres burned Tuesday following the lightning strike on the state park which is located on a small island at the mouth of Tampa Bay. News outlets report that officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Forest Service are expected to assess the damage on Wednesday.
FLORIDA KEYS MAN DIES WHILE DIVING FOR LOBSTERS
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reports in a news release that 60-year-old William Simko was diving in about 10 feet of water off Cudjoe Key Wednesday morning when he became distressed. A Navy helicopter responded and flew Simko to Lower Keys Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
FLORIDA APPEALS COURT UPHOLDS CITY USE OF RED LIGHT CAMERAS
The decision Wednesday by the 3rd District Court of Appeal conflicts with that of another appeals court. Judge say the use of red light cameras is an issue of great public importance that should go before the Florida Supreme Court.
