OFFICIALS: 1 DEAD AFTER METRO TRAIN HITS WORKERS IN MIAMI

Miami-Dade police tell local news outlets the Metromover crashed about 1 a.m. Wednesday. No passengers were on the train, which runs from 5 a.m. to midnight. Emergency crews took Luis Perez and Oscar Cabrera to the hospital. Cabrera died. Perez was treated and released. Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll told reporters one man was dangling from the side of the crane and was helped to the ground by co-workers.

WOMAN DIES WHEN SUV CRASHES INTO HOME AS SHE WATCHED TV

Jacksonville Sheriff’s officials tell local news outlets the woman died at the scene Tuesday night. It was about 10 p.m. when the driver of the Lincoln Navigator apparently lost control of the vehicle and smashed through the wall. The SUV continued through the home before coming to a stop in the backyard.

CRIMINAL CASES UNDER REVIEW FOR FINGERPRINT EXPERT MISTAKES

Public Defender Bob Wesley said Wednesday in a statement that his office is checking to see if any clients’ rights were violated. Marco Palacio, a fingerprint expert with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, was reassigned recently after the mistake came to light.

CHIEF OF STAFF FOR FORMER CONGRESSWOMAN PLEADS GUILTY

Elias “Ronnie” Simmons pleaded guilty Wednesday to fraud conspiracy and theft. Former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown has pleaded not guilty to similar charges, and her trial is scheduled for April. The charges followed an investigation into the purported charity One Door for Education. Federal prosecutors say it was billed as a way to give scholarships to poor students but instead filled the coffers of Brown and her associates.

PUBLIX SLICING OUT FREE DELI MEAT TO CUSTOMERS

The Lakeland-based grocery chain has ended a long-standing practice of giving customers complimentary slices of deli meat when they place orders at the deli counter at some stores. Publix deli workers would often give the customer the initial slice to examine the thinness or thickness of the meat. But Publix began to shift away from that practice at some of its stores about two weeks ago.
