CHARGES DROPPED FOR NIECE OF SUSPECT IN OFFICER KILLING
Prosecutors have declined to file charges against Lakensha Smith-Loyd, the niece of Markeith Loyd. Markeith Loyd is facing two first-degree murder counts and other charges related to the deaths of his pregnant ex-girlfriend and Lt. Debra Clayton. Smith-Loyd, was arrested on an accessory charge last month as authorities were conducting a massive manhunt for Loyd following Clayton’s killing.
TODDLER DIES AFTER BEING LEFT IN HOT CAR IN MIAMI
Miami-Dade police said in a news release on Tuesday that Samuel J. Schnall, who turned 1 on Jan. 20, died at a hospital after he was found inside the car on Monday afternoon. News outlets quote investigators as saying a family member was watching the child and had been “out and about” on Monday. When the family member came home, the child was left inside the car.
UNDERCOVER OFFICER FATALLY SHOOTS MAN DURING DRUG DEAL
Jacksonville Sheriff’s officials tell local news outlets the shooting happened Monday night when three narcotics officers met up with a “middle man” who was supposed to help them with the drug deal. When they arrived at the location, authorities say a man walked out of the shadows and pointed what appeared to be a weapon at a detective in the car. One of the officers was able to get his gun out and shoot the man.
FAMU BAND MEMBER APPEALS CONVICTION TO FLORIDA SUPREME COURT
Dante Martin on Monday filed an appeal to have his case heard by Florida’s top court. The Florida Fifth District Court of Appeal rejected the appeal for his 2014 conviction last November. Martin is serving a sentence of more than six years for manslaughter and hazing in the death of Robert Champion, who collapsed after being beaten by members of FAMU’s famed Marching 100 band in 2011.
FORMER FLORIDA LAWMAKER GETS HOME DETENTION FOR FRAUD
Reggie Fullwood was sentenced Tuesday. He pleaded guilty in September to federal wire fraud and tax charges, and prosecutors agreed to drop additional charges. The conviction could have carried a 21-year prison sentence. Court papers say Fullwood transferred money from his campaign account to a business account and then used an ATM card issued to his business.
