2 TEENS FACE MURDER CHARGE IN FATAL CRAIGSLIST ROBBERY
Tampa police said in a statement Thursday that they arrested a 17-year-old boy who now faces first-degree murder and robbery charges in the Tuesday night death of James Beck. A 16-year-old is already in custody who is facing murder and robbery charges. Beck’s body was found Tuesday night.
JUDGE LIFTS LIFE SENTENCE FOR FLORIDA MAN CONVICTED AS TEEN
A Tampa judge on Wednesday ruled that 39-year-old Floyd LaFountain has been jailed long enough and resentenced him to 22 years. With time served, LaFountain should walk free in a few days. LaFountain expressed remorse for the 1994 death of 73-year-old Manuel Huerta.
BOMB THREAT CAUSES EVACUATION OF MIAMI-AREA HIGH SCHOOL
Gulliver Preparatory School received the threat around 11 a.m. Thursday, and head of schools Frank Steel announced the Pinecrest campus was safe by 3:30 p.m. Normal operations will resume Friday. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Pinecrest police responded to the high school, while students were bused about 3 miles away to one of the school’s other campuses.
ANTI-TRUMP MARCH BACK ON IN FLORIDA AFTER BRIEF CANCELLATION
Alex Newell Taylor of Women’s March Florida said Thursday that her group and South Florida Activism have taken over the march from Stephen Milo. He had issued a statement earlier saying Saturday’s March to Mar-a-Lago was being canceled because of safety concerns. Newell Taylor says the groups have more experience organizing demonstrations than Milo and believe they have the expertise to keep it peaceful.
FLORIDA GOV. RICK SCOTT HEADING TO ARGENTINA FOR TRADE MISSION
Scott is scheduled to take a five-day trip in late April to Buenos Aires. This is Scott’s 13th trip abroad since he became governor in January 2011. Former Gov. Jeb Bush took 16 trade missions during his eight years in office. Scott has defended the trips as a way to open doors for Florida-based companies seeking business abroad. The Republican governor has made job creation the main focus during his time in office.
