OFFICER, CHIEF CHARGED IN FATAL CITIZENS ACADEMY EXERCISE
State Attorney Stephen Russell announced Wednesday that Punta Gorda Police Officer Lee Coel has been charged with felony manslaughter and faces up to 30 years in prison. Police Chief Tom Lewis has been charged with misdemeanor culpable negligence and faces up to 60 days in jail. Authorities say 73-year-old Mary Knowlton was taking part in a roleplaying scenario Aug. 9 when she was mistakenly struck with a live round.
SUSPECT IN KILLING OF T-PAIN’S NIECE IS FOUND DEAD
Tallahassee police reported Tuesday night that they found the body of 25-year-old Tavon Jackson almost six months after police identified him as the suspect in the slaying of 23-year-old Javona Glover. T-Pain, whose real name is Faheem Najm, tweeted about the slaying last August. Glover was Jackson’s ex-girlfriend and mother of his child.
COLLEGE SUSPENDS FRATS, CITES ‘HIGH RISK’ BEHAVIOR CONCERNS
All staff and students at Rollins College received an email Tuesday night from Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs Meghan Harte Weyant to notify them of the suspension. The email said the temporary suspension affects all six fraternities. She said the measure was taken after reviewing a “series of student conduct concerns.” It didn’t list specific incidents. The suspension doesn’t affect sororities.
MAN CHARGED IN TODDLER’S FATAL SHOOTING DURING DRUG DEAL
Local media outlets report that 24-year-old Devonte Lamar White was arrested Tuesday in Palm Beach County. He’s charged with first-degree murder and two other counts in the May 2014 shooting.
FAMILY OF SAILOR LOST ON SUNKEN FREIGHTER SETTLES SUIT
The family of Jack Jackson settled with Tote Services Inc. for $500,000 for pre-death pain and suffering, plus a confidential, undisclosed amount for economic losses. The 790-foot El Faro sank on Oct. 1, 2015, while traveling between Jacksonville and Puerto Rico. All 33 aboard died.
