FLORIDA AUTHORITIES IDENTIFY MAN KILLED BY DEPUTY IN LAKE

Sgt. Fred Jones of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office tells local news outlets that 49-year-old Wayne Donald Dorsey was the man killed Tuesday. The deputy, who has been with the sheriff’s office for 12 years, was placed on paid administrative leave.

Participation in the charity drive had plummeted since the Scott administration shifted control from the United Way of Florida to a New Jersey company called Solix. In 2014 and 2015, the company wound up getting paid more than it was distributing to charities. State employees this fall pledged to give $280,000 to local charities. But Solix stood to earn $180,000 in fees.

FLORIDA SUPREME COURT ORDERS NEW SENTENCE FOR RAPIST

A sharply divided Florida Supreme Court on Thursday ruled Thomas Kelsey should be resentenced due to changes in law dealing with juveniles. Kelsey was 15 when he broke into an apartment and raped a pregnant woman at knifepoint in front of her two young children. He was identified six years later through DNA evidence. In 2010, he was sentenced to two life sentences and two 25-year terms.

FLORIDA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL COACH JAILED ON RAPE CHARGES

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday they arrested 30-year-old Brad Casalvieri, who also teaches environmental science at Leon High School. The sheriff’s office said the relationship took place between June 2015 and February 2016 when Casalvieri was a teacher at Lincoln High School. He’s charged with 24 counts of sexual battery by a custodian.

POLICE: FLORIDA FATHER, SON HIRED HOMELESS IN PLOT TO KILL

The Treasure Coast Newspapers reported Wednesday (goo.gl/QxIxOu) that the pair sought out homeless men using free wireless internet at a Vero Beach McDonald’s to carry out the plot. Arrested were 44-year-old Suraj Narine and his 20-year-old son Christopher Narine. Indian River deputies also arrested 55-year-old Michael “Shorty” Hamons, who they say was paid $5,000 to kill Suraj Narine’s 73-year-old mother.
