MAN WITH MISSING WIFE CHARGED WITH TAKING $100,000 IN COINS
The federal theft complaint against Lewis Bennett was made public Monday. Bennett abandoned his sinking 37-foot catamaran near the Bahamas in May. He told the Coast Guard he didn’t know where his wife, Isabella Hellman, was. Rescue crews found Bennett in a life raft. Among Bennett’s belongings were 225 coins. Authorities say they had been stolen from a ship where Bennett worked last year.
FLORIDA DEMOCRATIC GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATES STILL AGREE
Former Congresswoman Gwen Graham, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum and businessman Chris King told the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches on Monday that they want to raise the minimum wage, improve the state’s schools and expand the economic base beyond tourism, agriculture and construction. The three are seeking the nomination to replace Republican Gov. Rick Scott in the November 2018 election. The primary is next August.
MAN FOUND DEAD IN FLORIDA FLOOD WATERS NEXT TO WHEELCHAIR
Local news outlets report that the 61-year-old man was discovered Sunday night in the Sara Palms subdivision of Manatee County. His wheelchair was found tipped over near him. Officials weren’t saying what he was doing outside or how he fell out of his chair. Deputies and rescue workers responded following a 911 call, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
REWARD INCREASED FOR MIAMI GIRL KILLED IN DRIVE-BY LAST YEAR
Miami-Dade police announced Monday during a news conference that they’ve increased the reward to $26,000 for information leading to an arrest. Police say Jada Page was standing near the front door of the home when someone in a black, 4-door Ford sedan started shooting at her father. Investigators say the bullets were intended for James Page, the girl’s father. He was wounded.
GIRL INJURED AFTER RUNNING IN FRONT OF FLORIDA DEPUTY’S CAR
The Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release that 30-year-old Deputy Wesley Blum couldn’t avoid hitting Alexis Romaca, who ran in front of the marked sheriff’s cruiser early Monday in DeLand. The incident report says Romaco was taken to a hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries. She was not at an intersection or a crosswalk.
