FLORIDA HOUSE POISED TO BAN ‘SANCTUARY CITY’ POLICIES ACROSS FLORIDA
The bill debated Thursday on the full floor intends to force local officials into complying with federal authorities and threatens those who refuse to do so with hefty penalties and a potential oust from office. Florida would be able to withhold state funding from local governments who act as “sanctuary cities” under the bill.
STILL NO VERDICT IN EYE DOCTOR’S $105M MEDICARE FRAUD CASE
Jurors in West Palm Beach will continue deliberating Friday in the case of Dr. Salomon Melgen. The panel began deliberations Wednesday following a two-month trial. Prosecutors say Melgen stole up to $105 million from Medicare between 2008 and 2013, giving patients treatments and tests that couldn’t help them. Melgen’s attorneys contend any billing issues were simply mistakes.
FLORIDA BILL WOULD GIVE FOSTER PARENTS FREE PARK PASSES
The Senate unanimously passed the bill Thursday. It would also give foster families half price discounts on camp sites. Republican Sen. Aaron Bean said his bill is a way to thank the 5,000 families who are caring for foster children. Families that adopt a special needs child in the state’s care would receive a one-time annual park pass.
US RELEASES VENEZUELAN ACTIVIST SEEKING ASYLUM IN MIAMI
The abrupt detention of Marco Coello in Miami drew protests from Venezuelans in the U.S. and questions from Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. Immigration attorney Elizabeth Blandon confirmed that Coello was released Thursday. Coello was among hundreds of people arrested in Venezuela during protests in 2014 against the government of President Nicolas Maduro.

House and Senate Republicans negotiating a comprehensive gambling bill that focuses primarily on casino gambling are including in the legislation proposals regarding fantasy sports. Senate negotiators on Thursday offered their support for a House bill that says betting on fantasy contests would be allowed as long as the sponsor of the contest is not a participant.
