SLAIN FLORIDA PRIEST WORKED WITH PEOPLE WHO WERE ‘DANGEROUS’
The Rev. Rene Wayne Robert is believed to have been helping a troubled Jacksonville man recently released from jail when he was killed, authorities say. They believe the suspect kidnapped the priest, took him to Georgia in his own car and killed him there, but the motive for the slaying remains unclear.
DEAN OF STUDENTS ACCUSED OF NOT REPORTING ABUSE ON BUS
Pasco County Sheriff’s officials said in a news release on Tuesday that 34-year-old Courtney Stanley was arrested on two counts of failure to report child abuse. Spokeswoman Carrie Hortsman says two students reported they had seen incidents of sexual battery on a bus to Stanley on April 8 and April 12. She says Stanley didn’t report the incidents to school officials, the Department of Children and Families or law enforcement.
FLORIDA MAN PLEADS GUILTY IN $4.8M GOLD TRUCK HEIST
Court records show Roberto Cabrera faces a maximum of 50 years in prison after pleading guilty Monday to robbery, firearms and other charges. Sentencing is set for June 23 in Miami. The FBI says Cabrera, co-defendant Adalberto Perez and an unidentified third man used a GPS device in March 2015 to track the gold-laden tractor-trailer heading from Miami to Massachusetts.
CLAIMS OF DRINKING, CALLING POLICE PIGS GET JUDGE SUSPENDED
The court’s order Tuesday takes effect immediately for Judge Jacqueline Schwartz. She faces a range of possible penalties, including removal from the bench. A Judicial Qualifications Commission investigation found that Schwartz appeared to be impaired on March 18 at a Coconut Grove restaurant, where witnesses said she berated waiters and called police “pigs.” The probe also found on March 28 Schwartz was drunk on the bench to the point where her bailiff had to drive her home.
OFFICER FIRED AFTER BEING CAUGHT UP IN PROSTITUTION STING
Boynton Beach police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said in a news release Tuesday that Vintyre Finney was fired last week. The eight-year veteran has been on paid administrative leave since October. That’s when authorities say Finney drove up to a woman he believed to be a prostitute and offered her $20 for oral sex. The woman was actually an undercover deputy with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
