MICHELLE OBAMA TO SPEAK AT DISNEY VETERANS’ EVENT
First lady Michelle Obama is expected to put her support behind private sector efforts to hire veterans during a forum at Florida’s Walt Disney World. Wednesday’s event is aimed at getting companies to develop programs for bringing ex-soldiers into the workforce. Obama is scheduled to give a keynote address.
FLORIDA HOLDS 2 MORE HEARINGS ON CASINOS AND GAMBLING
Florida state senators are holding their final two public hearings about the future of gambling in the Sunshine State. Eighteen people have signed up to testify for the Thursday afternoon hearing that will be held at the WSRE-TV studio in Pensacola. Nearly 40 people have signed up for Friday’s hearing that will be held on the downtown campus of Florida State College at Jacksonville.
TRIAL DELAY IN CUBAN’S SUIT AGAINST REDS’ CHAPMAN
A Cuban man’s lawsuit in South Florida against Cincinnati Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman has been delayed until next summer. Trial had been set for December, but a Miami federal judge agreed Wednesday to postpone it until June because the Cuban plaintiff is still imprisoned in Cuba. The plaintiff, Danilo Curbelo Garcia, claims that he was arrested in 2008 after Chapman falsely accused him of involvement in human trafficking.
MAN TO SELL ORNAMENT COLLECTION FOR HIS CHURCH
A longtime Christmas ornament collector whose collection dates back to 1860 will sell the ornaments as a way to return a favor to his church. Michael Nitzsche will begin selling the collection Thursday. All proceeds will go toward the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Nitzsche was diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer and the church congregation helped pay for his medical bills because he is uninsured.
BSO HOLDS MEMORIAL FOR FALLEN OFFICERS
Nine fallen police officers and deputies will be remembered during a memorial service in Fort Lauderdale. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is holding the memorial on Thursday. Sheriff Scott Israel will say a few words in remembrance. The officers being honored span several decades.
