Orlando entertainment complex opens
The newest entertainment complex has opened in Orlando’s International Drive tourist corridor. Scores of people came out Monday for the opening of the 360 I-Drive complex. The complex includes the 400-foot Orlando Eye observation wheel, a wax museum and an aquarium. Daredevil aerialist Nik Wallenda walked untethered across the top of the Orlando Eye last week. Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs says the opening of the complex is a boon for tourists and workers alike.
1 injured, large bear killed after north Florida car crash
One person was seriously injured and a large black bear was killed after a car in north Florida struck the animal and then collided with another vehicle. The crash on Sunday evening started when the 560-pound black bear was fatally struck while crossing a stretch of road near the town of Hawthorne. The driver of the car then collided with an SUV, sending both vehicles off the roadway.
$4.6 million UCF study wages war on deadly citrus greening
A five-year, $4.6 million research program at the University of Central Florida is testing a possible bactericide against the deadly citrus greening disease that’s devastating the state’s citrus groves. The research centers around Zinkicide, a nanoparticle as small as a DNA molecule. It’s a formulation of the chemical element zinc. Zinkicide appears to move freely through a citrus tree’s vascular system and attacks the greening bacteria inside tree cells. Asian citrus psyllids are the carriers of citrus greening bacteria.
Crews search for missing parasailer off Florida’s west coast
The Coast Guard and local agencies are searching for a parasailer a witness saw disappear into the waters off Florida’s Redington Beach. WTSP-TV reports a bystander along the beach west of St. Petersburg saw a person gliding with a motorized parasail hit the water, bob for 10 minutes and then go under Monday evening. Coast Guard crews from Clearwater, Sand Key, the Cutter Alligator and authorities from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and marine units are searching the area. The sheriff’s office plans to conduct solar searches Tuesday morning.
Man shoots, kills neighbor’s puppy
Deputies have arrested a Florida man they say shot a family’s puppy to death with a shotgun after it ran into his yard. WKMG-TV reports deputies arrested Kevin McClenithan and charged him with animal cruelty after he shot his neighbors’ puppy Friday in Burnell. Bullet, a 10-month-old, purebred Labrador retriever, belonged to the Durrance family, who lived nearby. The family’s two oldest children found the dog dead of a shotgun wound at McClenithan’s house after the puppy got loose in the neighborhood.
