Police: Shooter was fixated on George Zimmerman
A Florida man charged with shooting at George Zimmerman last week had “a fixation” on the former neighborhood watch leader and had recently been admitted to a mental institution, according to a police report made public Tuesday. The Lake Mary Police Department report said that 36-year-old Matthew Apperson had shown signs of paranoia, anxiety and bipolar disorder. Apperson’s attorney, Mark NeJame, didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment. Zimmerman and Apperson had a previous road-rage encounter last September, when Apperson alleged that Zimmerman had threatened him. Apperson decided not to pursue charges, and police officers were unable to move forward without a car tag identified or witnesses.

A police officer shot in the leg Sunday by a teenager who minutes later was fatally wounded by police was released from the hospital. St. Petersburg police say 40-year-old Officer Michael Cordiviola was released Tuesday. Authorities said on Sunday, suspect Austin Goodner argued with four people near a city pool, shot a man on a bike in the arm and then shot Cordiviola in the leg. Goodner was known to officers, having been involuntarily committed twice in 2011. He had also been previously arrested for aggravated battery.

Officials with Florida’s Department of Agriculture say 103 skimmer devices that are used for identity theft have been discovered at more than 7,500 gas stations it inspected. Two gunmen opened fire on a group of young people sitting in an open area of an apartment complex in Miami-Dade County, killing a 13-year-old and wounding four others, police said. The teen was standing nearby when he was struck.
Judge: Undernourished baby to remain in state custody
A 7-month old central Florida girl will remain in state custody after a judge found probable cause for child neglect. The child and her mother returned to Florida over the weekend following a massive search. Altamonte Springs police became concerned last week when officials went to the home to check on reports that Penelope Hogarth was undernourished. Police said 21-year-old Jessica McCreery and child weren’t there. The child’s 46-year-old father David Hogarth was arrested after a pot-growing operation was found at the house. His comments caused police to be concerned about the safety of McCreery and the child.
