Bear killed in collision with 2 cars in north Florida
A black bear was killed in north Florida after being struck by two cars in the second such accident in the area over the past 8 days. The Florida Highway Patrol says no people were injured in the collision near Micanopy on Sunday. The crash occurred when a bear crossed into the path of a BMW traveling south on Interstate 75 at about 11:45 p.m. The bear continued walking after being struck and was hit by another vehicle on the other side.
Police: Zimmerman shooting linked to prior dust-up
A shooting incident involving George Zimmerman is the latest in a series of run-ins the former neighborhood watch volunteer has had with the law, random strangers and his ex-wife since he was acquitted of murder charges two years ago in the death of Trayvon Martin. A man with whom Zimmerman was involved in a road-rage encounter earlier this year, Matthew Apperson, called 911 to report the shooting Monday in the Orlando suburb of Lake Mary, Officer Bianca Gillett told a news conference. Zimmerman, meanwhile, flagged down an officer to report someone had shot at him. Gillett said both Zimmerman and Apperson have yet to be interviewed formally by investigators, and it was unclear whether any charges would be filed.
Sarasota jail inmate died of hypertension
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office says the death of an inmate at the jail appears to have been related to hypertension. Preliminary autopsy findings from the Medical Examiner’s Office in the death of 42-year-old David Washer showed he died of hypertension, which caused his heart to swell. The findings showed no signs of any trauma to his body. Washer died Saturday morning as he prepared to eat breakfast in his cell.
Darden lays off 30 in Orlando
Orlando-based Darden Restaurants will lay off 30 workers at its headquarters. The Orlando Sentinel reports notices went out to employees on Monday. Darden is the parent company of Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse. Company spokesman Rich Jeffers says the cuts came in several departments and will give Darden a “flatter support structure.” The company is also realigning positions in employee relations, guest relations and talent acquisition from corporate into individual restaurant brands.
Man gets 65-year sentence for child porn
A federal judge has sentenced a 31-year-old central Florida man to 65 years in prison for producing and distributing child pornography. U.S. District Judge Roy B. Dalton issued the sentence on Monday in Volusia County. David Guite pleaded guilty on Feb. 20. He was arrested during an undercover sting. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports an FBI task force officer acting in an undercover capacity posted an advertisement frequented by people who have an interest in children and incest. Guite answered the ad and sent the agent sexually explicit images of a young boy.
