Sheriff: Young brothers cooking before shooting kills 2

A Florida sheriff says a 12-year-old boy was cooking with his older brother when an argument started, and he shot his 6-year-old brother to death, wounded the older brother and killed himself. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco identified the 12-year-old boy as Kevin Pimentel. Deputies say he killed 6-year-old Brady Pimentel and wounded 16-year-old Trevor Pimentel. The sheriff earlier said there was an argument over food, but at a news conference Thursday he said that was under investigation. The sheriff says the boys were home alone while their mother was working. Authorities have found no evidence that child welfare officials or police had been called to the home before the shooting Wednesday night.

Woman fatally struck while crossing Interstate 95

Authorities say a vehicle fatally struck a woman who was walking on Interstate 95 near Fort Lauderdale. The crash happened around 5:25 a.m. Thursday just south of Broward Boulevard on I-95. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue officials say the woman appeared to be attempting to cross the interstate and was pinned under the vehicle that hit her. She was taken to a Fort Lauderdale hospital where she later died.

Juveniles to get therapy for child pron Instagram account

Prosecutors say three South Florida teens accused of creating an Instagram account to solicit and post explicit photos of other minors will participate in therapy and community service rather than face criminal charges. The Broward State Attorney’s Office reported Wednesday that the 13-year-olds – two boys and one girl – will undergo a juvenile diversion program that usually takes three to six months to complete.

South Florida suspect dies after swallowing drugs

Authorities say a South Florida man is dead after swallowing drugs in an apparent attempt to avoid arrest. The Broward Sheriff’s Office reports that drug task force detectives were conducting an undercover operation in an Oakland Pak neighborhood Wednesday night when 38-year-old Michel Antoine Rodriguez arrived to deliver methamphetamine. When Rodriguez noticed detectives approaching him, authorities say he swallowed the drugs he was carrying.

Push for resort casinos stalls in Florida Legislature

A push to bring casinos to South Florida is stalling again in the Florida Legislature. A top House Republican earlier this month proposed a sweeping overhaul of the state’s gambling laws. That legislation would allow two casinos to be built in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. But the bill has yet to come up for a vote. A House panel held a four-hour workshop Thursday on gambling. It was clear that steep divisions remain between casino backers, dog track owners and business groups opposed to gambling. Three years ago, a bill allowing casinos was rejected.
