ORMOND BEACH MAN GETS DEFERRED PROSECUTION IN BEAR SHOOTING
An Ormond Beach man who shot and killed a black bear last year has accepted a deal that will allow him to avoid any jail time. According to a deferred prosecution agreement signed last week, 37-year-old Nathan Hargrave will be required to perform 50 hours of community service, attend a hunter safety course and pay more than $3,500 in investigative costs for the Oct. 4 incident.
MIAMI AIRPORT BOMB THREAT NETS MAN 3 YEARS’ PROBATION, FINE
A Pennsylvania man must serve three years of probation and pay a $1,000 fine for yelling that he would detonate a bomb last fall at Miami International Airport. U.S. District Judge Cecilia M. Altonaga decided Monday not to add more prison time to the six months Joseph Rivera has already spent behind bars since his September arrest. Altonaga did also order Rivera to perform 100 hours of community service.
NOVA CITED FOR FORMALDEHYDE VIOLATIONS IN LAB
The U.S. Department of Labor has cited Nova Southeastern University for 10 violations relating to the school’s use of formaldehyde in its anatomy laboratory. The agency’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Monday issued the citations, claiming the South Florida-based school had failed to provide protective equipment for workers using formaldehyde. The agency also said the school had failed to provide eye-washing stations and a medical surveillance program in the lab.
500 ILLEGAL GAMBLING MACHINES SEIZED DURING SWEEP
Manatee County Sheriff’s deputies say more than $117,000 and more than 500 illegal gambling devices were seized recently at multiple locations. Since January, the sheriff’s office has been investigating illegal gambling operations throughout the county in conjunction with the State Attorney’s Office and the Florida Illegal Gaming Task Force.
SWIMMER DROWNS IN SEA OFF ST. AUGUSTINE BEACH
Police say a man died while swimming in rough surf off St. Augustine Beach. St. Augustine Beach Police Cmdr. Jim Parker says 32-year-old Sean Beaudet’s body was found Saturday afternoon in the ocean near F Street. Parker says Beaudet moved to the area from Maine last month and was known by his family to be a strong swimmer.
