LEGISLATURE VOTES TO REPLACE CONFEDERATE GENERAL’S STATUE
The House approved the bill Wednesday requiring the Great Floridians Committee to recommend three individuals to be considered by the Legislature and governor to replace Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith. Smith is famous as the last Confederate officer to surrender a significant military force in the Civil War.
POLICE ARREST 2 TEENS IN FATAL SHOOTING OF MIAMI 6-YEAR-OLD
Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and police officials said at a news conference Wednesday that 18-year-old Leonard Adams and a 17-year-old male were jailed on charges of second-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder. Police also named the 17-year-old, but The Associated Press does not generally identify juveniles charged with crimes.
FLORIDA SENATE PASSES BILL TO REBURY STUDENTS FROM DOZIER SCHOOL
The Senate voted unanimously Wednesday for a bill (SB 708) that tries to help Florida deal with the legacy of the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys. The Marianna school was shuttered in 2001, and some former students have accused authorities of physical and sexual abuse.
FLORIDA STATE FRAT SUSPENDED FOLLOWING HAZING INVESTIGATION
The university reported in a news release Wednesday that the complaint was filed in January through the school’s hazing website. The TKE member said pledges were forced to participate in a drinking game called “Old South,” where they were made to act as slaves. They were also left stranded more than 150 miles from the Tallahassee campus.
FLORIDA SENATE PASSES BILL REQUIRING RAPE KIT TESTING WITHIN 30 DAYS
The Senate voted unanimously Wednesday for the bill that is a top priority of Attorney General Pam Bondi. The legislation was proposed after an audit released last fall showed that as many as 13,000 rape kits have gone untested in Florida.
