SENTENCING IN FLORIDA FOR CONVICTED TERROR BACKER
Sentencing is set for a man convicted in South Florida of supporting terrorists in a case where an undercover FBI agent used Internet chats to pose as a financing middleman. A Miami federal judge is scheduled to sentence 31-year-old Gufran Mohammed on Friday. He faces up to 15 years behind bars after pleading guilty. His lawyer says he should get only about eight years for conspiring to support the al-Shabbab terror group in Somalia and al-Qaida in Iraq.
43 CUBAN MIGRANTS RETURNED HOME BY US COAST GUARD
The Coast Guard has returned more than 40 Cuban migrants caught at sea to their homeland. Officials say 43 migrants were picked up by one Coast Guard cutter in the Florida Straits in three separate incidents over the weekend. The migrants received food, water, shelter and medical care aboard the U.S. vessel before they were returned Wednesday to Bahia de Cabanas, Cuba.
HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER ANNOUNCES GENDER CHANGE
Parents, students and teachers at a high school in Pasco County received word that a social studies teacher no longer wants to be identified as a man. The news came to parents via email and robocall on Thursday, while teachers learned of it at school. District officials say Robert Konrad has started the process of gender transition.
CUBAN SALSA SINGER CROONS ONCE AGAIN IN MIAMI
A Cuban singer who returned to live on the island after several years in the U.S. will perform in Miami’s Little Havana. Manuel Gonzalez – also known as the “Salsa Doctor” – will sing again in Florida on Friday. Gonzalez is perhaps most famous for his song “The Bridge.” In the piece, he croons about creating a bridge between Miami and Havana. The singer fled Cuba in 2001 after he was banned from Cuban airwaves.
JACKSONVILLE BOY, 13, CHARGED AS ADULT IN MURDER
Prosecutors are charging a 13-year-old boy as an adult for the fatal shooting of a homeless man in Jacksonville. State Attorney Angela Corey said Thursday that she decided to charge the minor as an adult with second-degree murder. Police say the boy was 12 at the time of the shooting. The boy is accused of killing 54-year-old Thomas Trent in July.
