MARISSA ALEXANDER RELEASED FROM JAIL
The Florida woman awaiting a new trial in a controversial “stand your ground” case is free on bond. Marissa Alexander was released from jail Wednesday. In 2012, Alexander was sentenced to a mandatory 20-year prison sentence for firing what she insisted was a warning shot during a fight with her husband. She tried to invoke Florida’s “stand your ground” law but the judge threw out her self-defense claim. An appeals court ruled in September that the judge in the case gave improper jury instructions, and a new trial has been set for next year.
GOV. SCOTT ANNOUNCES LICENSE-FREE FISHING FOR THANKSGIVING WEEKEND
Florida Gov. Rick Scott is waiving fishing license requirements for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The governor and state wildlife officials have declared Friday, Nov. 29 a license-free freshwater fishing day and Saturday, Nov. 30 a license-free saltwater fishing day. Each year, the state authorizes eight license-free fishing days to help grow the fishing industry and promote conservation stewardship. All other fishing and boating rules and regulations still apply.
FATHER ARRESTED AFTER INFANT LEFT IN CAR
A central Florida man faces felony child neglect charges after a 2-month-old infant was left inside a locked car outside a Best Buy store. A Florida Highway Patrol officer doing an off-duty detail noticed the child and tried to find the car’s owner. He broke the vehicle’s window and took the child, who was not injured.
