FLORIDA GOVERNOR TO ANNOUNCE NEW UNEMPLOYMENT RATE
Florida Gov. Rick Scott is going to announce the state’s latest jobs numbers. Scott is scheduled on Friday to release information about job growth and the state’s unemployment numbers during a visit to Boca Raton. The state’s jobless rate in September was 6.1 percent, or a drop of 0.2 percent from the previous month. The rate is the lowest it has been since June 2008. Florida’s rate is currently above the national average of 5.8 percent.
2 KILLED IN CRASH ON 1-75 NEAR OCALA
Two people are dead and another seriously injured after a crash on Interstate 75 near Ocala. The Florida Highway Patrol says the collision occurred Thursday morning, killing a man and a woman and backing up southbound traffic for nearly six hours. Troopers say that an International truck was driving north when its front left tire blew out, causing the driver to lose control. The truck smashed through a guardrail on the median and veered into southbound lanes, colliding with a pickup.
PINELLAS COUNTY TARGETS TOURISTS IN U.K.
St. Petersburg and Clearwater are calling on London. Pinellas tourism agency Visit St. Pete/Clearwater is spending $245,000 this winter to launch its first marketing push aimed at attracting tourists from the United Kingdom. That’s the beaches’ No. 1 pool for international visitors, including Canada. In years past, VSPC relied on tour operators there to push Pinellas County as a vacation destination.
MAN CONVICTED OF KILLING WIFE’S BOYFRIEND
A disabled Florida Panhandle man faces a possible life sentence for fatally shooting his estranged wife’s boyfriend and wounding her. A Bay County jury found 44-year-old Michael Joe McCoy guilty Wednesday of manslaughter and aggravated battery. He had faced charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder.
BABY SITTER ACCUSED OF STEALING FROM FAMILY
Deputies say a baby sitter is accused of stealing almost $17,000 from a family in Palm Beach County. Sheriff’s officials say 54-year-old Emmanuella Demaio faces charges of organized scheme to defraud, grand theft and extortion. She remained in jail Friday.
