DETECTIVES NOT LOOKING FOR SUSPECTS IN FATAL TAMPA FIRE
An executive with a fireworks company says a Florida man found dead inside a burned home bought more than a dozen items from a store a few days ago. Phantom Fireworks Vice President William Weimer says Darrin Campbell purchased the fireworks Sunday. Campbell’s father-in-law says Campbell, his wife and their two children were found dead Wednesday in a home they were renting.
TRIAL RESUMES OF MOM ACCUSED OF KILLING KIDS
A Tampa jury will resume hearing testimony in the trial of a mother accused of shooting and killing her two teenagers. Julie Schenecker’s defense attorneys are scheduled to present their case Friday. On Wednesday, the state rested its case, and Hillsborough County Judge Emmett Battles gave the jury Thursday off.
HEARING IN FLORIDA TERROR CASE AFTER MARSHAL ASSAULT
Security and other issues are the subjects of a hearing in the Florida terrorism-related case of two brothers now accused of assaulting deputy U.S. marshals. U.S. District Judge Robert Scola set a hearing Friday morning in the case of Sheheryar and Raess Alam Qazi. They have pleaded not guilty to charges of plotting to blow up New York City landmarks to avenge deadly U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan.
VENEZUELANS EN ROUTE TO DC TO PRESS FOR SANCTIONS
Venezuelans from Miami are en route to Washington to join a national call for sanctions against Venezuela. Three buses carrying more than 100 people left Miami on Thursday. They’re scheduled to arrive Friday morning. Ernesto Ackerman of the nonprofit Independent Venezuelan-American Citizens says they will be joining Venezuelans traveling from 19 states and 37 cities.
ELDERLY MAN GUILTY IN FATAL SHOOTING
An elderly central Florida man has been convicted of fatally shooting another man following an argument at a vacant house where authorities say people gathered to drink and do drugs. A Volusia County jury convicted 71-year-old Freddie Lee McKiver of second-degree murder Thursday. He faces a possible life sentence.
