PENSACOLA JAIL EXPOLDES
A gas explosion at the Escambia County Jail’s booking facility has injured more than 100 inmates and corrections officers. A county spokeswoman says the explosion happened around 11 p.m. CDT Wednesday in Escambia County jail’s booking facility and caused the building to partially collapse.
AMERICAN TO PLEAD GUILTY IN 1984 CUBA JET HIJACKING
An American who returned from Cuba decades after hijacking a jetliner to the communist island is set to plead guilty to a kidnapping charge in South Florida federal court. A change of plea hearing was set Thursday for 57-year-old William Potts, who said he returned last year from Cuba to finally resolve the 30-year-old U.S. case.
JURY SELECTION IN DOUBLE MURDER TRIAL IN 4TH DAY
The Tampa woman accused of shooting and killing her two teenagers wiped away tears as a high school classmate of her daughter was called as a potential juror. The emotional moment in Hillsborough County Court happened Wednesday. Julie Schenecker is accused of killing her 16-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son in 2011. The 53-year-old is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
300 OFFICERS, SPECIAL OLYMPICS ATHLETES TORCH RUN
About 300 law enforcement officers from agencies across Broward County are expected to join Special Olympics athletes in a torch relay. The group will take part in the 32-mile countywide torch run on Thursday to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics. The Special Olympians will start the run with the Olympic torch in Hallandale Beach and end in Lighthouse Point.
BILL ADDRESSES SEX OFFENSES IN FLORIDA SCHOOLS
School employees and volunteers who commit sexual offenses against students would face tougher penalties under a bill being sent to Gov. Rick Scott. The Senate passed the bill unanimously on Wednesday. The idea behind the legislation came from students at Armwood High School in Hillsborough County as part of the “It Ought to be a Law” competition.
