LAWMAKER ACCEPTS DEAL AFTER DUI ARREST
A member of the Florida Legislature arrested on a drunken driving charge was sentenced to six months of probation and subjected to alcohol tests under a plea deal agreed upon Thursday. Thirty-one-year-old Rep. Dane Eagle was arrested in April after an officer spotted him driving erratically and he refused to be tested. The Cape Coral Republican refused to resign after his arrest.
DAD USES 2 DAUGHTERS IN BURGLARY
Police say a 29-year-old Florida man is charged with child neglect after bringing his young children along while stealing from a construction site. The man was arrested Thursday in Manatee County and his daughters, ages 6 and 8, were placed in the custody of child protective services.
SHOT FIRED DURING FIGHT AT UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI
Police say a suspect is in custody after an attempted shooting at the University of Miami. Coral Gables police say a woman entered the School of Communications building Friday morning and got into a fight with a man in the equipment room. Coral Gables say one round was discharged during the altercation, but no one was injured.
PROSECUTORS TO SEEK DEATH PENALTY IN CHILD’S DEATH
Prosecutors will pursue the death penalty for a woman accused of killing her ex-partner’s two-year-old daughter after leaving a bizarre note citing a Bible story. A court filing made by the State Attorney’s Office this week announces prosecutors’ intentions regarding 40-year-old Kimberly Lucas, who is jailed awaiting trial in the May killing.
TRAYVON MARTIN FOUNDATION GETS NEW HOME
The Trayvon Martin Foundation is up and running in its new home at Florida Memorial University. The historically black university hosted a ceremony Thursday for the foundation, which honors the Miami teen who was gunned down in 2012 by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman.
