CASEY ANTHONY JUDGE RETIRING FROM BENCH
A Florida judge who gained an international audience while presiding over Casey Anthony’s murder trial three years ago is retiring after nearly 25 years on the bench. Chief Judge Belvin Perry on Monday turned in a letter stating he intended to resign at the end of August. The 64-year-old Perry presided over Anthony’s 2011 murder trial.
MOM ARRESTED AFTER LEAVING CHILD IN CAR
A Jacksonville mother was arrested on Sunday after leaving her 5-year-old daughter in a hot car outside a Costco store. She later told police that the child didn’t want to go into the store and didn’t think it was wrong to leave the girl in the car. A passerby saw her and removed her from the car.
FLORIDA SUPREME COURT REJECTS INMATE APPEAL
The Florida Supreme Court is rejecting an appeal from a death row inmate who contends drugs used in an execution could cause him pain. Eddie Wayne Davis is scheduled to die Thursday by lethal injection for the 1994 murder of 11-year-old Kimberly Waters. Davis was convicted of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and kidnapping, raping and murdering Waters.
BOY KILLED BY OUT-OF-CONTROL VEHICLE IN SOUTH FLORIDA
A 4-year-old boy is dead after an out-of-control vehicle struck him as he stood in front of a South Florida home with his grandmother. The Broward Sheriff’s Office says the 54-year-old grandmother was taken to the hospital Saturday afternoon with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
WHERE WILL LEBRON PLAY?
Before LeBron James makes his next decision, Pat Riley will get a chance to convince him to stay in Miami. Two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press late Sunday night that James will meet with the Heat president this week before making a decision about where to play next season. The time and location of the meeting were still being scheduled, said the people who spoke on condition of anonymity because neither the Heat nor James announced their plans publicly.
