4 DEAD IN PLANE CRASH IN RURAL PART OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY
Authorities say four people are dead after a twin-engine propeller plane crashed in a rural part of Miami-Dade County shortly after taking off from a local airport. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Arnold Piedrahita said the pilot reported engine trouble before the plane went down Wednesday afternoon and burst into flames. No buildings on the ground were damaged. The location is mainly farmland.
2 SLEEPING IN DUMPSTER GET EMPTIED INTO GARBAGE TRUCK
Authorities in Florida say a man and woman who were intoxicated had to be rescued after falling asleep in a dumpster that was later emptied into a garbage truck. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s officials say the couple had been sleeping in a dumpster outside a convenience store near Tampa early Wednesday. When the dumpster was emptied into the back of the garbage truck, they started screaming and banging on the sides of the truck.
DOLPHIN DIES AT SARASOTA MARINE LABORATORY
A dolphin that was rescued in the Florida Keys after beaching himself 12 years ago has died at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota. The Herald-Tribune of Sarasota reports the pantropical spotted dolphin named Moonshine died Tuesday following a brief illness. Officials at the marine laboratory announced it will close to visitors for the rest of the week. Moonshine was rescued in 2003 by the Animal Rescue Society of Miami. He was suffering from severe sunburn. He was taken to Mote to recover, but the National Marine Fisheries Service determined he was a poor candidate for release because of liver conditions and his young age.
DEPUTIES: ROAD RAGE INCIDENT LEADS TO STABBING
Deputies say an apparent road rage incident led to a stabbing in a tourist area in Davenport, which is near Kissimmee. The incident happened Monday night when a driver in a sports utility vehicle cut off another man in traffic. According to Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies, the victim flashed his lights at the man and followed him to a convenience store parking lot where they got into an argument.
ORANGE COUNTY BANS RELIGIOUS MATERIAL IN SCHOOLS
A central Florida school board has voted to ban the distribution of religious or political material at schools after a group wanted to hand out Satanic coloring books. The Orange County School Board in Orlando approved the new policy Tuesday night. The new policy will allow the passive distribution of some materials but nothing that is religious or political. The school district has allowed Bibles and materials from an atheist group to be distributed at schools for the past three years.
