SOUTH FLORIDA US REP. GARCIA JOINS 24 IMMIGRATION FAST
South Florida U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia is joining a 24-hour congressional fast relay in solidarity with a group of immigration activists on the National Mall. The freshman Democrat will fast until late Friday morning. He follows 24-hour fasts by Reps. Joe Kennedy, D-Mass., and Juan Vargas, D-Calif.
SCOTT TOURING MIAMI PORT DREDGING OPERATION
Gov. Rick Scott is touring the dredging operation at Miami’s port that is geared to handle larger ships soon to be passing through a widened Panama Canal. Scott planned a news conference Friday after touring the dredge named Terrapin Island. The dredge is deepening the port’s main channel to 50 feet in the next 18 months, about the time the larger Panama Canal is set to open.
MAN GETS LIFE FOR ICE CREAM TRUCK SHOOTING
A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the fatal shooting of a popular ice cream man in South Florida. A Palm Beach County judge sentenced 21-year-old Frank Collins on Thursday. He was convicted in April of first-degree murder. Fresnel Atilus left behind six children and a then-pregnant wife.
CENTRAL FLA. MAN GETS LIFE FOR FATALLY STABBING GRANDMOTHER
A central Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his grandmother. A Polk County judge sentenced 25-year-old Christopher Whaley on Thursday after a jury convicted him of first-degree murder. Prosecutors say Whaley stabbed 69-year-old Barbara Denmark more than 20 times as she took a bath at her Lake Wales home in April 2012.
TEEN CHARGED IN BOY DEATH EYED IN 2ND KILLING
A Florida man charged with killing a 10-year-old boy during a South Florida nail salon robbery now stands accused in a second unrelated slaying. North Miami police said Thursday that 19-year-old Anthawn Ragan and others still at large fatally shot a man outside a Miami motel on Nov. 1. Ragan is charged with first-degree murder and possession of a weapon by a violent career criminal.
