FLORIDA WANTS US SUPREME COURT TO DECIDE GAY MARRIAGE
Florida’s attorney general is asking state courts to stop considering same-sex marriage cases until the U.S. Supreme Court decides whether states have the right to ban gay marriage. Attorney General Pam Bondi filed two motions on Friday in a state appeals court, requesting a freeze on appeals of cases concerning the state’s constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Voters approved the amendment in 2008.
FLORIDA LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEES APPROVE NEW DISTRICTS
Florida legislative committees on Friday approved a proposal to make slight changes to seven congressional districts to comply with a court order. Panels in both the House and Senate passed the new map altering the districts, which stretch from central to northeast Florida. A final vote in the full House and Senate on the new map is expected early next week.
SHERIFF SETTLES WITH WRONGLY ARRESTED WOMAN
A Louisiana mother who was wrongly arrested twice in northeast Florida has settled a lawsuit with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office for $67,000. The sheriff’s office confirmed that the settlement was reached last month, and it was paid through the agency’s insurer. Records show that Ashley Nicole Chiasson spent four weeks in jail starting in January on grand theft charges and another week in jail this spring on a charge of writing bad checks. But authorities were actually seeking a woman named Ashley Odessa Chiasson both times.
FLORIDA TEEN ACCUSED OF ABUSING BOY TO GET HIV TEST
A teenager who was beaten unconscious after a Daytona Beach father says he found him sexually abusing his 11-year-old son will undergo HIV testing. On Thursday, 18-year-old Raymond Frolander pleaded not guilty to a charge of sexual battery on a child under 12. The boy’s father says he requested the test because he wants to know if Frolander passed something on to his son.
COAST GUARD CALLS OFF SERACH FOR MISSING BOATER
The U.S. Coast Guard says it has suspended the search for a boater missing off Key Largo. Authorities say 24-year-old Noah Cullen went missing on Monday afternoon. His boat was found later that day partially submerged about seven nautical miles off shore.
