FLA. LAWMAKERS ORDERED TO DRAW NEW VOTING MAP
A Florida judge has ordered legislators to draw up a new congressional map for the state after the old one was ruled to be illegal. Circuit Judge Terry Lewis wants the new map by Aug. 15, meaning that legislators would have to hold a special session over the next two weeks in order to comply with the decision. Lewis said he will then consider whether to order a special election later this year under this new map.
BAHAMIAN MAN SENTENCED IN SMUGGLING VENTURE THAT KILLED 4 HAITIAN WOMEN
A judge has sentenced to prison a Bahamian national who called 911 when the boat carrying him and over a dozen other migrants capsized, killing four Haitian women. George Lewis pleaded guilty in May to illegally re-entering the U.S. after being deported. Prosecutors agreed to drop other charges of smuggling resulting in death. Lewis was sentenced to five years in prison and three years’ probation.
DEPUTIES: MAN CRITICAL IN I-95 ROAD RAGE SHOOTING
A manhunt was underway Friday for a suspect police said shot a 22-year-old Florida man in an act of road rage. Twenty-two-year-old Steven Simon, of West Palm Beach, was driving on Interstate 95 Thursday evening near Stuart when the incident took place. The suspect shot Simon in the head through a window, leaving him in critical condition.
HOLDER HAMMERS GOV. SCOTT ON VOTING ISSUES
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder wrote Florida Gov. Rick Scott a scathing letter about Florida laws and actions that have restricted access to voting, saying he is “deeply disturbed” by barriers to voting put in place since the governor took office. Holder said that his office will carefully monitor Florida elections for voting changes that could hamper voting rights.
3-DAY BACK TO SCHOOL SALES TAX HOLIDAY
Florida’s back-to-school sales tax holiday is kicking off. Through Sunday night shoppers do not have to pay sales and local sales taxes on clothing worth $100 or less. Sales taxes are also waived for school supplies worth $15 or less.
