2 NURSES HONORED FOR TRYING TO SAVE MAN’S LIFE
Two nurses were honored by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office for trying to save the life of a man who was shot in a movie theater in January. Derek Friedhoff and his girlfriend, Jennie Manera, both nurses, were given the award. Friedhoff and Manera were at a movie theater in Wesley Chapel on their day off when they heard a shot.
FLORIDA WOMAN CHARGED IN ROMANTIC SCAM OF ELDERLY MAN
A South Florida woman is facing felony charges after allegedly using a romantic getaway as a pretense to scam an elderly man out of thousands of dollars. The Broward Sheriff’s Office reported Wednesday that 46-year-old Michelle Nicholas is charged with grand theft and exploitation of the elderly.
HACKATHON OFFERS $20K FOR COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS
The Miami innovation cheerleader eMerge Americas and the national organization Techweek are looking for the best tech-based solutions to address local community needs. The organizations are co-sponsoring a Hackathon May 2-4 at the University of Miami. Applicants will be judged on their presentation, program sophistication, and of course, how well it works. Top winners will collect $20,000 in cash.
GRADUATION HELD FOR NEWLY TRAINED POLICE DOGS
Newly trained police dogs are formally being sent on the job with a graduation in West Palm Beach. Four bloodhounds and their trainers will be honored at Thursday’s ceremony. The bloodhound puppies are all from the same litter and have been training since they were nine weeks old. They underwent instruction in detecting human scent, as well as simulations for various police scenarios.
FWC OFFERS BOWHUNTING COURSE IN FORT LAUDERDALE
State wildlife officials are offering a bowhunting course in Fort Lauderdale where students can get hands-on experience shooting a bow and arrow on a range. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is hosting the course on Thursday at Fort Lauderdale Archers. Participants must complete the online portion before the course and bring it with them.
