Lifeguard season scaling down

With the start of the new school year, the lifeguard season at Navarre Beach is scaling down.

Weekdays, beachgoers are urged to swim in the area near lifeguard tower three, located east of the Navarre Beach Pier, which will continue to be manned by lifeguards.

On weekends, lifeguards coverage expands, with staff guarding the beaches at towers one and two found gulf-side in Navarre Beach Park, and towers three and four located to the east of the Navarre Beach Pier.

Melvin ousts Goodin from commission seat

Read more...Challenger Jim Melvin, 65, defeated two-term incumbent Gordon Goodin in the winner-take-all universal primary Tuesday to represent District 4 on the Santa Rosa County Commission.

“I feel humbled,” Melvin said shortly after unofficial results were posted. “It’s a big win for Santa Rosa County.”

Navarre Press phone lines down due to lightning

The Navarre Press phone system received a surge on Saturday because of a nearby lightning strike. A telephone repair crew is on their way!  Ourinternet is also down - due to a Mediacom outage in the area. Fortunately, we have back up with a Verizon aircard on one computer. Plane lands safely on beach road between Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach

Read more...A small aircraft landed safely this morning on J. Earle Bowden Way – the “beach road” between Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach.

Dan Brown, Gulf Islands National Seashore superintendent, said a National Park Service ranger notified him about 8:15 a.m. Thursday that the plane, identified as a Cessna 172 Skyhawk, had landed on the asphalt road near Opal Beach and was parked in the Opal Beach lot.
