Wrestler Sam Hazewinkel, a Pensacola Christian Academy graduate, begins his quest for Olympic gold Friday in London. Competition begins at 7 a.m. CT.

Hazewinkel, 28, will compete in the 55-kilogram freestyle bracket. He is Team USA’s top-ranked wrestler in that weight division. He went 140-0 and won three state championships at Pensacola Christian Academy, won two Junior National Greco Championship and 107-7 in three seasons at the University of Oklahoma. Hazewinkel lives in Norman, Okla., where he trains with Gator Wrestling Club, coached by Rob Hermann.

Hazewinkel’s father, Dave, and uncle, Jim, both were Olympians.

The U.S. women's national soccer team plays Japan at 1:45 p.m. CT Thursday for the 2012 Olympic championship. The final is a rematch of a dramatic 2011 Women's World Cup title game won by Japan. Demetrius Smith, who will be a senior at West Florida High School in Pensacola this year, has verbally committed to play football for the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers.

"It's a great opportunity for him and he is one of these kids who has been a four-year starter for us," said Jaguars coach Harry Lees. "He's tall and he has really good speed."

Smith is 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 155 pounds. He played cornerback and free safety for the Jaguars.
