It may feel like high school baseball season ended with Navarre’s loss at Pace in April, but almost a month later one area team still is playing.
And playing well.
Pensacola Catholic (28-0), the defending Class 4A state champions, will play Bishop Verot (24-6-1) in the state semifinals at 3 p.m. Monday at JetBlue Park, the Boston Red Sox’ spring training home in Fort Myers. The game is a rematch of the 2011 Class 3A and 2012 Class 4A title tilts. Bishop Verot won 4-3 two years ago and the Crusaders won 7-2 in Port St. Lucie last year, but this meeting is practically a home game for the Vikings from Fort Myers.
Catholic coach Richard LaBounty isn’t worried.
“We have always tried to have the approach of just enjoying practice and working hard,” LaBounty told the Pensacola News Journal. “We don’t put a lot of pressure on (the players). The players know the magnitude of the game. We don’t really talk about it. We just practice and do what we need to do.”
