Argos will head to Tampa for South Regional
INDIANAPOLIS - The West Florida baseball team will make its fourth straight trip to the NCAA tournament, as the NCAA revealed the 48-team tournament field for the 2013 Division II tournament Sunday night. The Argonauts (35-12) will be the No. 4 seed in the NCAA South Regional hosted by the University of Tampa, and they will face No. 3 seed Florida Tech (32-17) in the first round on Thursday, May 16 at 6 p.m. CT.
"It's a great accomplishment for the program," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "I'm very proud of the players and their effort, time and hard work they put in to continue that success that the other teams before them were able to build. I'm proud of our overall body of work this year. We were disappointed in our conference tournament outcome, but I thought they played hard. We're working to fix some of those things during our practice time."
The 48-team field includes six teams from each of the eight regions in Division II. Tampa is the No. 1 seed in the South Region and will host the double-elimination regional tournament on May 16-19. The other five teams headed to Tampa are No. 2 Delta State, No. 3 Florida Tech, No. 4 West Florida, No. 5 Valdosta State and No. 6 Stillman.
"We feel like we have as good a shot as anybody to win the regional," said Jeffcoat. "It's got to be good baseball. You have to do all three phases of the game well when you're in a regional: pitching, hitting and catching. This team has the capability to do that. We've done it this year with pitching and defense, and we've been solid hitting. We've got to overcome some of those things that may hit us during the tournament. That's what you need to do to win."
