NHS softball: Four games, four wins

WEB Sara WIlson made a great defensive play against Milton

The Lady Raiders’ softball team played four away games in one week and won all four. Next week will be a key week for Navarre. The Raiders will be looking to avenge two early season losses to Pace and Tate. (PHOTO: Sara Wilson's defensive play saved a game-tying run against Milton.)

Navarre 16, Pine Forest 0

The Raiders traveled to Pine Forest on March 4 to make up a game that was rained out Feb. 22. The Eagles probably would have been happy not to play the game, as the Raiders scored 16 runs before the contest mercifully was called after three innings.

The Raiders jumped all over the Eagles’ pitching. Navarre scored six runs in the first inning on eight hits. The next inning the Raiders had seven more hits and scored seven more runs. They eased up in the third inning, only scoring three times.

Shana Pearl led the Navarre offense with four hits. Brooke Murphy and Allison “Cat” Pettigrew each added three hits. Jenna Bobbit, Kamber Anderson and Allyson Bacon contributed two hits apiece.

Navarre 1, Milton 0

Pettigrew was at her best, shutting out Milton on three hits in a 1-0 away win March 5. Pettigrew struck out 11 batters in seven innings. The Panthers’ only scoring threat occurred in the second inning; after a runner reached second base, Pettigrew struck out the side to end the rally.

The Raiders only had five hits in the game. They scored the game’s only run in the first inning. Pearl led off the game with a bunt single and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Murphy’s infield out moved Pearl to third and she scored on a wild pitch.

Sara Wilson had the play of the night when she dove to her left, caught the ball, scrambled to her feet and threw out the batter at first base. Her play saved at least a double.

Navarre 9, Catholic 2

Audrey Thomas went seven innings and the Raiders overpowered Catholic 9-2 in an away contest March 7.

The Raiders scored six runs in the second inning on only three hits.

Pearl had three more hits and made a spectacular sliding catch in short center field. Anderson also contributed with two hits. Crystal Evans made a nice play in right field, backing up a play at first base and throwing out a runner.

Navarre 10, Pensacola 0

Pettigrew shut out the Tigers on two hits over seven innings in Navarre’s fourth straight away game March 8.

Almost every batter contributed. Pettigrew, Taylor, Anderson, Wilson, Bacon and Shelby Kesinger each had one RBI and Murphy had two. Pettigrew and Wilson each had two of the total eight hits against Tigers’ pitching.

The Raiders’ record is now 7-2 in district play and 9-3 overall. The next scheduled game is at home against Pace on Friday, March 15.
