Got skills

Carson LowryMore than 50 youth players as young as 5-years-old arrived at Navarre Youth Sports to discover that learning can be fun, especially when the subject is soccer.

The players arrived June 12 to for a one-week camp.

“We want them to learn the game of soccer, but more importantly, we want them to have fun,” said Rob Simon Coach.

Maya Ugarte was doing just that, despite a sock problem.

“I don’t have matching socks because our dog chewed them up,” she said.

She was one of eight players who just learned trapping and passing skills taught by Raiders’ Mary Matechik and Elaina Cain.

There were five groups of campers, each practicing a different skill. Simon could not run the camp alone.

“We have 26 high school soccer players that came out to help these younger players,” Simon said.
