Its official, the Navarre Lady Raiders are softball champions.
Navarre defeated the Milton Lady Panthers, 5-2, in the championship game Friday after eliminating host Escambia, 3-2 on Thursday.
While Kinsley Mason’s pitching wasn’t overpowering in terms of a high strikeout rate, her control was all that needed as she pitched to the corners and kept the ball low producing mostly ground balls that were fielded cleanly by her teammates. Fly balls to the outfield were a rarity, but one, a seventh inning, two-run homer by Milton’s Desiree Velasquez, spoiled a no hit bid by Mason. But Mason shook off the fence clearing blow and struckout two and got the Panthers’ top hitter Katie Worley to pop out to third, ending the game and giving Navarre the district title.
