First-time starter Jeff Van Camp's performance in place of injured quarterback Rusty Smith was among Florida Atlantic's few bright spots in a 56-29 loss to UAB Saturday at Birmingham's Legion Field.
“This was a bittersweet way to get your first start and it wasn't the outcome we wanted, but hopefully next week we’ll get a win,” said Van Camp, 22, a redshirt junior who threw for more than 900 yards for Navarre High School in 2005, his senior season. Van Camp completed 24 of 35 passes for 254 yards and three touchdowns and scored the Owls' other touchdown on a 5-yard run. He threw two interceptions.
